A handy guide to the English translations of Maori words and phrases commonly used in schools:

Kura – School

Matua – Father

Pakeha – Of European descent

Tuakana – Elder sibling (same gender)

Teina – Younger sibling (same gender)

Whaea – Mother, Aunt
